Re: TV for Free

Hi Sean,
We ditched cable in 1986 when we got married. We could not evenget Global at that time which had Channel 22 for Toronto, though later came Channel 41. We were never able to get the 2, 4, or 7 from Buffalo.
We bought our house in 1991, and again declined cable - the local provider sends mail to us as "Resident/Tenant", which always returned. I installed a UFO antenna and have been happy with it for nearly 20 years. Still the same reception as before. We have saw the start and end of WNEQ; both conversions of WNYB-WNYO, and would occasionally get Toronto's TV pirate StarRay on Channel 15.
In December 2008 I got our first digital convertor, a really cheap thing - the picture quality blew me away. I then went and got two better convertors at The Source - the channel selection and image quality was terrific.
Then came the US shut down and the selection jumped dramatically.
We get 32 over the air channels, four of them are religious, three all kids, and a mixed bag of other junk. Reception comes from Jamestown NY to Buffalo NY to Rochester NY; not to mention good old Toronto. CICA does not have a transmitter (their loss), CKXT comes and goes, as does CIII. When the switch comes with CIII going to 41, CKXT goings to 40, and CICA to 19, the sub channels Stateside will going big time.
Then another catch-up will happen: what will Canadian channels offer on their sub channels?
All in all the $125 for the antenna in 1991 was well spent - how many thousand dollars have we saved? Don't know, but if cable firms can take a signal 'off-air' and resell it without first paying the provider, that is why we do not have cable.
Regards
